You need a car, but don't know where to start. Buying a new car is out of the question. So a used car it is. There are many used cars out there--some are wrecks, some are too expensive and some are too old. Finding a used car takes time and patience. With a little research, however, you can be driving in no time.

Your Local Newspaper

The first place to start in your search for a used car is your local newspaper. Look in the classifieds section under "Cars" or similar wording. The listings will include used cars from private homes and local dealers. Some newspapers even include pictures of the cars for sale. Check print and online versions of your local paper then make a list of possible prospects and telephone numbers. Hint: Purchase a vehicle report on the used car to check for past accidents and other problems.

Local Car Dealerships

The next place to look for used cars is your local car dealerships. When people trade their old car in for a new one, the used car is generally placed on the back of the lot for sale. Used cars from dealerships are generally cleaned up and ready for sale soon after they are traded in. Note: Make sure you ask for a vehicle report on the used car to check for past accidents and other problems.

CarMax.com

Don't want to leave your house to search for a used car? Log on to the Internet and visit carmax.com. CarMax.com has 1000s of cars for you to choose from. You can do a search based on price, car, car type and other factors. Cars can be transferred from one CarMax dealer to the next---so you are not limited to just one dealer. Each car at CarMax goes through a 125+ point inspection, so you don't have worry about getting a lemon. Also, each car comes with a free vehicle history report.

Auctions

There are many local government and private company auctions where you can buy a used car at a reasonable price. Check your local government's police or sheriff department for dates and times. Also check repossession companies in your area. Most auction cars are from seizures, car rental agencies and other organizations. Do your research and get to the auction early to check out the cars.
