How to Buy a Used Car in Maryland

Buying a used car can be a risky process. Used cars are often much less expensive, though they may have more wear and tear. Different states have different requirements for buying and selling used cars. Maryland is a fairly simple state to buy a used car in.

Instructions

    1

You can go to the variety of used car lots in Maryland or buy from an individual. You can also look through online outlets such as cars.com and limit the search to used cars in Maryland.

    2

Get an inspection. The cost is reasonable, and although it is not required for the sale, it will be required to register the car and will give you a good idea of what shape the car is in. Look for a repair shop certified by the state to do the inspection. If the car does not pass inspection, you will be told what needs to be done so it will pass.

    3

Agree to a price and conditions to buy the car. A dealer may want you to sign legal documents, but all that is required by the state is that the owner and buyer sign the back of the title and list the mileage.

    4

Register the car at a Maryland DMV. You will need the state inspection certificate, proof of auto insurance and a driver's license, along with a registration fee.
