How to Obtain a New Certificate of Origin for a VW

A manufacturer's certificate of origin, also known as a manufacturer's statement of origin, is a document produced by an automobile manufacturer that authenticates a new car. All automobile manufacturers, including Volkswagen (also known as "VW"), issue a manufacturer's certificate of origin with each new car they ship. This certificate allows the purchaser of a new car to properly register the car with the department of motor vehicles. Manufacturer's certificates of origin, both the original document as well as replacement ones, can be obtained only by automobile dealers licensed in the their respective states.

Obtain a state-issued automobile dealers license. Only individuals who have such a license are eligible to receive a new certificate of origin for any automobile, including a VW.

Ensure that there are no loans against the VW. Until an automobile is owned free and clear of any loans, the certificate of origin will be held by the lender.

Contact Volkswagen of America, provide your automobile dealer license number and request a new certificate of origin for the VW in question. You will generally receive the new certificate of origin within five to seven business days.
