When you sell or get rid of a car in the state of Alabama, you are allowed to keep the vehicle's license plate for use on another vehicle. You can reassign a license tag from an old vehicle to a new vehicle by contacting your local Alabama tag office and transferring the tag to your new vehicle when you register it.

Instructions

    1

Remove the license plate from the vehicle it was previously registered to. You will need to remove the screws that are holding the license plate in place to remove the plate.

    2

Take your license plate with you when you go to register your new vehicle in the county you are living in. When you are asked if you would like to purchase a new license plate for your vehicle, you should tell the clerk at the DMV or tax collector's office that you wish to use a license plate you already own. Provide the clerk your license plate's information. The clerk will reassign your existing license plate to your new vehicle.

    3

Attach the license plate to the vehicle it is now assigned to. If applicable, you may need to contact your car insurance company and inform them of the switch so the insurer has your current license plate number on file for the correct vehicle.
