Sold or bought a car recently? Inherited or received a car as a gift? Wanting to add another person to the title? If so, you will need to change the car's title with the local Department of Motor Vehicles. Most states allow you to change your car title online so you don't have to waste hours standing in line to do a simple thing. You will need to check if your state allows it, but if it does, this will save you hours of time and effort.

Instructions

    1

Go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles' website. Find the link where it says you can change your car title.

    2

Fill out the form. It is best to provide more detail so your application does not get bounced back for confusion on the Department of Motor Vehicles' part. If you have any questions on how to answer a question, call the department before submitting your application. Be sure to double check your application before sending it.

    3

Scan all necessary documents, such as certificate of title and any required signatures.

    4

Attach the necessary documents to the application such as certificate of title, and signatures of the seller (if there is one) and buyer (if there is one) and any lien holders (if there are any).

    5

Enter your credit car information to pay the transfer of title fee. Make sure to print out the receipt and confirmation for your records. Wait for an email with an attached document or a hard copy document in the mail to confirm the change of title.
