A 1990 Mitsubishi Galant V Series has a 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) riveted to the dashboard near the windshield on the driver's side. In a Galant VIN such as JA3CR56VXLZ000000, the first 11 digits are identification codes and the last six, the serial number.

The First Three Digits

"J" means Japan, where it was manufactured. "A" means Mitsubishi and "3" means it's a passenger car. All Mitsubishi passenger cars made in Japan have these symbols.

The Next Five Digits

In the next five digits, "C" means safety belts but no air bags, "R" means it is a Galant, "5" means it is in a higher price class, "6" means a four-door sedan and "V" means it has a 2.0 liter, four-cylinder engine.

The Ninth, 10th and 11th Digits

The ninth digit, "X," is a check digit that prevents fraud, the 10th digit "Y" means the year 1990 and the following "Z" identifies the manufacturing plant in Japan. See tech.mirage-performance.com or dmv.org to calculate a check digit and identify the year.

The Remaining Six Digits

The remaining six digits, represented as "0" in the example, form a unique serial number for the car and tell the sequence that it came off the assembly line. These digits and the ninth security digit change for each 1990 Mitsubishi Galant V manufactured at the same plant.
