How to Avoid a VIN-Cloned Used Car

VIN-cloning is a crime similar to identity theft, except that it involves stealing a vehicle's identity. The crime is usually committed by stealing the Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN, of a vehicle in parking lots or car dealerships and creating a counterfeit VIN tag. This is then used to replace the stolen car's tag and then sold to unsuspecting used car buyers. With the use of computer technology, authentic looking documents are presented to the buyers.

Instructions

    1

Check the VIN of a used car before purchasing it. Look at the VIN number on the dashboard, under the door jamb and under the hood of the car. Match up the VIN with the one that is on the car title to detect any discrepancies.

    2

Examine documents such as the title and registration of the used car to avoid VIN-cloning. Look for errors such as misspelled words.

    3

Obtain a comprehensive history report of the vehicle. Use the VIN to pull up a history report using online resources such as www.nicb.org.
