The trim code on your GM truck or car is also known as a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). This number is used to provide information pertaining to when and where the vehicle was made. It also is used to identify the model of the vehicle and the body style. The 17-character code can be found in various places on the vehicle. You don't have to be a GM technician to decode your VIN number. You can do it yourself.
Instructions
- 1
Find the VIN on your car or truck. It should be on the instrument panel and on the vehicle title that came with your car or truck.
2Look for the first 3 numbers of the trim code. These will represent the manufacturing division that the car came from. For instance, "1G1" represents a Chevrolet car and "1G2" represents a Pontiac.
3Look over the next 5 digits of the VIN. These will give you the description of the vehicles. The 4th and 5th digits of the VIN represent the series of the vehicle. The 6th number represents the body type. The 7th digit represents the restraint system installed on the vehicle. The 8th digit represents the engine type that was installed.
4Look for the next 3 digits. These represent the production number of the car or truck. The last 6 digits are the vehicle's serial number.
