The BMW 135i and 335i are both rear-wheel drive and share the same engine, a 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder that puts out 300 horsepower. They are, however, wrapped in two very different packages. The 135i is a smaller entry-level car geared towards enthusiasts who are looking for a sportier driving experience. The 335i, on the other hand, is a more "grown up" luxury car.

Pricing

The two models are priced surprisingly closely, which has led to much debate about the pros and cons of the two cars. Considering its supposedly entry-level positioning, the 135i is considered a little expensive with an entry price of around $36,700. A 335i sedan is about $41,100, while a 335i Coupe is $43,000. A fully optioned 135i can surpass the $50,000 mark.

Styling

Though both models were designed with BMW's so-called flame-surfacing treatment, they look quite different. The 3 Series is long and low, whether it's in two-door coupe guise or the four-door sedan. It is considered a more elegant and prestigious design than the 1 Series. The 1 Series, on the other hand, has a squat, truncated aesthetic. The 135i in particular has come under fire from some critics as being not that attractive.

Interior

The two cars have similar-looking interiors. The 135i, however, is definitely smaller than the 335i. While it's not cramped as the 1 Series by any means, there is just a bit more room in the 335i. The four-door 335i offers even more room for back seat passengers. The quality of the 135i's interior is also not quite as nice as the 335i.

Performance

Though the 335i and 135i share the same powertrain, they offer extremely divergent driving experiences. The 335i, while fast, is a luxury car through and through. Its handling is impressive, but there is not a lot of driver involvement. The 135i, on the other hand, offers a much more sporty driving experience thanks to its more aggressively tuned suspension and performance-oriented Brembo brakes. On a winding stretch of road, the 135i is a very fun car. The 335i, while fun, is not as involving. In a way, the 135i has become what the 3 Series used to be.

Choosing

This depends on what the buyer is looking for in a car. Both are quite quick and fun to drive. But the 135i is going to offer more driving involvement, whereas the 335i is going to offer more luxury. If the majority of driving is spent commuting on the freeway, the 3 Series would be the best pick. While the 1 Series is a terrific car in its own right, the 335i arguably offers more car for the money.
