How to Find Wheel Offset

Mechanics use the term "offset" to describe how far a wheel's hub-mounting surface is from its centerline. Some wheels have a hub-mounting surface to one end of the centerline, a line that bisects the wheel. This produces a positive offset. Other wheels, such as "deep dish" wheels, have a hub-mounting surface that passes the centerline. This producing a negative offset. If the hub-mounting surface runs exactly along the centerline of the wheel, the wheel has no offset at all.

Instructions

    1

Measure the distance between the wheel's hub-mounting surface and its inboard flange.

    2

Measure the wheel's overall width, in inches. This may exceed the wheel's advertised width.

    3

Divide your answer by 2. If the wheel is 10 inches wide: 10 / 2 = 5 inches.

    4

Subtract your answer from your answer from Step 1. If your first measurement equaled 6 inches: 6 - 5 = 1 inch.
