As gas prices continue to rise, more and more people are looking to trade in their old gas-guzzling cars for newer, more fuel-efficient models. This will ultimately provide significant environmental benefits.
Pollution
Dangerous substances, such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds are released into the atmosphere when our cars burn fuel. Reducing the amount of fuel used by our cars helps control air pollution.
Smog
Smog is a serious problem in most cities. Car exhaust produces many of the substances that contribute to the formation of smog. Burning less fuel reduces the amount of these substances released into the air.
Climate Change
Fuel-efficient cars reduce the amount of global warming gasses such as carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. Hybrid cars can cut carbon emissions by as much as half.
Less Oil Exploration
By reducing the demand for fuel, we can avoid oil exploration in environmentally-sensitive areas, such as Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Pacific Coast.
The Future
Hybrids and diesel engines are currently the most fuel-efficient cars on the market. Automakers and researchers are working on more fuel-efficient vehicles that will be released to the market in years to come.
