How to Ask for the Best Price Possible

We all want the best price. We don't all know how to get it. Car dealers, in particular, seem to get the better of us. You can take charge. You can be confident. You can beat them at their own game. You can get the best price for a new car or other big ticket item.

Instructions

    1

Be prepared. Read reviews. Compare prices. Know the facts. Know the product and what it is worth to you. Remember that big ticket items are negotiable.

    2

Find out what the seller paid. This, not the price tag, is your starting point. For example, according to Consumer Reports, a reasonable price to start negotiations on a new car is 1 to 5 percent above what the dealership paid.

    3

Remember not to be overeager. Silence is key. Bargains are part of the system.

    4

Negotiate separate items, for example, sales price and financing, individually. One low monthly price might not be low in every way.

    5

Do without unnecessary extras. If you won't end up using it, don't buy it.

    6

Remember that you're in control. You can always go somewhere else.
