Highest Ranking Cars After Three Years

Consumer Reports declares a car loses forty-seven percent of its value in the first three years. When you buy a car three years old or older, you avoid taking that loss. Your savings will be even greater when you also buy a vehicle known for reliability. Choose the most reliable car, whether you need a small car, family sedan, SUV minivan or luxury sedan.

Small Car

Buy an older Honda Civic and you have reliable transportation with classy looks and good fuel economy. The BuyingAdvise team reports the Honda Civic "may just be the best car value on the road." You can seat five people and your mileage varies from 28 miles per gallon, or mpg, in the city and 34 mpg in country driving. Crash test ratings were at or near the top for front and side impacts.

Family Car

Choose a Honda Accord for a larger car that fits the needs of a family. Consumers rate this car at 8.8 out of 10, according to edmonds.com. It rated 21 mpg in city driving and 27 mpg on the highway. Although the Insurance Institute gives it excellent ratings for front and side crash safety, it rated poor in rear crash safety.

High-End Cars

The Lexus ES gives you fuel efficiency of 21 mpg in city driving and 30 mpg on the highway. Consumers rate it as 9.0 out of 10. It features a six-cylinder motor with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It has the highest possible ratings for front impact collisions and high ratings for side collisions by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

SUVs

If you need to seat eight in your SUV, the Honda Pilot can do that and it has perfect safety ratings for crash tests in side and front impact. Consumer Reports ranks the Pilot as its highest SUV. Edmonds.com listed it as 8.5 by consumers. In smaller SUVS, the Honda CR-V grabs the Consumer's Report vote, the Editor's Most Wanted car and an edmonds.com used car Best Bet.

Minivan

The Honda Odyssey won the Editor's most wanted, the Consumer's Most Wanted, and the used car Best Bet awards from Edmonds.com and was most highly rated by Consumer Reports. It gets 18 to 19 mpg and provides transportation for seven to eight passengers. It has perfect safety ratings during crash tests from both groups doing safety ratings.

Luxury Car

When your budget allows, the best rated choice by Consumer Reports is an Infinity M35. Edmonds.com cites its strengths as performance more than appointments, listing a "muscular engine," an "outstanding" five-speed transmission, confident handling, a "spacious cabin" with lots of luxury features. The Infinity M35 got the highest rating for safety on front and side impacts. Mileage ratings are 18 to 19 mpg.

Sports or Sporty Car

Consumers rate the Mazda Miata MX-5 as 9.3 and edmonds.com lists it as a Best Used Car Bet. The 2007 model has a power hardtop convertible that stores itself in the vehicle. It comes with a five- or six-speed transmission and can go from 0 to 60 in 7.5 seconds, according to edmonds.com. Plan on getting 24 mpg.
