In 2001 Mitsubishi released five versions of the Eclipse. All versions were front-wheel drive and had a single overhead cam. The GT Coupe and GT Spyder Convertible trim models have 24-valve engines, instead of the 16-valve engines in the other three trim models. Larger valve numbers can improve the performance of the vehicle.

The GS Coupe, GS Spyder Convertible and RS Coupe all come with a four-cylinder 2.4-liter engine and manual transmission. The GT Coupe came with a V-6, 3.0-liter engine.
