How to Tow a Passenger Vehicle

Towing a passenger vehicle is easy once your preparation is done. Towing can be very dangerous if done with improper equipment. This article will tell you how to safely tow a passenger vehicle.

Instructions

    1

Ensure your vehicle is capable of towing a passenger vehicle. The towing vehicle should be at least 750 pounds heavier than the vehicle being towed. Consult your owner's manual to see the towing capacity of your vehicle. Compare this with the vehicle you wish to tow. Towing vehicles need side mirrors on both sides.

    2

Ensure your towing vehicle is properly equipped to tow a passenger vehicle. This will require a class 2 hitch and wiring that will connect with the towing dolly or trailer. In addition, the towing vehicle should be in proper working condition. This means at a minimum, the vehicle will pass a safety inspection.

    3

Obtain a tow dolly or trailer. There are several rental companies that will rent these items for you. If you plan on doing a lot of towing, it may be worth your while to purchase a dolly or trailer. Dollies are best for front wheel drive vehicles; trailers are best for rear wheel drive vehicles. If purchasing, consult with the retailer to ensure the item you are purchasing is suitable for your needs. Rental companies can do the same. In addition, rental companies can sell and install trailer hitches and wiring harnesses.

    4

Load up. Attach the dolly or trailer to your towing vehicle. The rental companies will show you how to do it if needed. Test the blinkers on the tow dolly or trailer to ensure they are working. Strap the towed vehicle into place per the manufacturer's instructions. Double check all straps and safety chains to ensure everything is properly in place. Check the tire pressure in the towing vehicle, and the rear tires in the towed vehicle if using a dolly.

    5

Tow your passenger vehicle. You will be driving at lower speeds during towing. 55 MPH or less is recommended. Driving while towing a passenger vehicle requires deliberate moves. Anticipate turns prior to making them. Avoid abrupt braking or changing lanes.
