The Average Mileage on a Compact Car

One benefit of buying a compact car is that they often deliver better fuel mileage than their larger counterparts. The government's combined ratings show the average fuel mileage drivers can expect when traveling on interstates and highways.

More than 40 MPG

    The 2011 Honda Civic Hybrid delivers a combined fuel mileage of 41 miles per gallon (MPG) with front-wheel drive, a 4-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. Hybrid vehicles operate on a combination of gasoline and an electric motor.

More than 30 MPG

    Two 2011 Volkswagen compact cars offer combined fuel mileage that tops 30 MPG. With a diesel engine, the front-wheel-drive Golf and Jetta produce a combined mileage rating of 34. The Mazda 2 with a manual transmission has a combined mileage of 32, while the Kia Rio and MINI Cooper Countryman produce 31 MPG with a manual transmission.

29 to 30 MPG

    Cars delivering 30 combined MPG with a manual transmission include the Hyundai Accent and Chevrolet Aveo. The Accent produces the same result with an automatic transmission. Compact vehicles offering a combined 29 MPG include the Mazda 2 with an automatic transmission and the Ford Focus with a manual transmission.
