How to Buy a Used Luxury Car

Selecting a gently used luxury car can make it possible to own a prestigious brand that otherwise would exceed your budget. Other than buying privately from a local seller, you may want to consider a manufacturer's "pre-owned" or reconditioned car program, as well as traditional used car dealerships.

"Pre-Owned" Vehicles

It may be a polite way to say "used," but these programs include benefits you won't find in a private sale and perhaps not even on a traditional used car lot. Manufacturers offer these recent-model cars, usually trade-ins from preferred customers, with warranties and scheduled maintenance programs.

Traditional Used Car Sales

You may be able to find the car of your dreams on a used car lot. Start with local dealerships that sell vehicles of comparable price and brand to the model in which you're interested. You could find a low-mileage trade-in that's just what you want. Make sure you know the vehicle's condition before you buy.

Private Sales

Buying directly from the previous owner of a car may enable you to find a great deal---or one you'll regret. Contact a dealership that sells the brand you're considering and verify whether the vehicle should have a transferable warranty. Ask the seller to allow you to have a mechanic check out the car and walk away if the answer is no.
