The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded both the 2008 and 2009 Chevrolet Impala models a five-star NCAP safety rating. With minimal upgrades to factory-standard features and no changes in the car's design, the choice between the 2008 or 2009 Chevy Impala is primarily contingent on your budget. Either way, the midsize five-seat sedan is consistently among America's top-selling vehicles.

Trim Options

Both 2008 and 2009 Chevy Impala models come in four different trimsLS, LT, LTZ and SS, in order of least to most power, features and expense. The primary differences between the trim options relate to the engine and power capabilities. All trims have a V-6 engine, except the SS, which has a V-8. Horsepower ranges from 211HP on the LS trim to 233HP on the LT and LTZ trims and 303HP on the SS trim.
The only real visible difference between the models is the slightly larger wheel diameter and increasing rim sizes: the LS and LT trims have 225mm wheels on 16- and 17-inch rims, respectively. The LTZ and SS trims have 235mm wheels on 18-inch rims. There is no variation between the 2008 and 2009 models.

Pricing

MSRP for the 2008 and 2009 Chevrolet Impala LS models were, respectively, $21,975 and $23,790. The V-8 engine SS option has a slightly higher price point of $29,355 and $31,135. As of April 2010, the overall retail value for used 2008 LS models ranged from just over $7,000 to $15,675. The 2009 retail value ranged from $9,050 to more than $17,500.

Safety Features

The most notable improvement to safety features from 2008 to 2009 was the introduction of a factory-standard anti-lock braking system (ABS). ABS came standard on all SS trim models even before 2009, however.
Additional improvements to standard safety features include the addition of front- and rear-side airbags, traction control, tire-pressure monitoring and auto-crash notify. These features are the same for all trim options.

Fuel Economy

Only minor improvements were made to fuel economy from 2008 to 2009 for the Chevrolet Impala. The V-6 engine LS trim model averaged 18 city mpg and 29 highway mpg in 2008, while the 2009 version improved to 19 mpg in the city and stayed at 29 on the highway. The V-8 engine SS trim model didn't change at all, with 16 city mpg and 24 highway mpg for both years.

Standard Interior Features

Some standard interior features of the 2008 and 2009 Chevrolet Impala include an audio system with satellite and MP3-capable CD player; 18.6 cubic feet of cargo space; dashboard display of average speed, average fuel consumption, instantaneous fuel consumption and range for remaining fuel; and voice-activating system.
Various upgrades and convenience packaging exists for both 2008 and 2009 models; 2010 purchases may not be eligible for upgrades, depending on the dealer.
