With rising fuel costs and concerns over the damage car exhaust does to the environment, some consumers want products that will save money and protect nature. Auto makers have responded by making cars and SUVs that offer better gas mileage than older models. Many vehicles on the market now get better than 30 miles per gallon (mpg).
Toyota Prius
This hybrid car has the best fuel efficiency of the 2010 vehicles, according to TheDailyGreen website (see Resources). It gets 51 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway. On average, it only burns 3.7 tons of carbon dioxide every year and has an annual fuel cost of $801 based on normal driving habits, TheDailyGreen says.
Honda Civic Hybrid
This car gets 40 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway. On average, it only burns 4.4 tons of carbon dioxide every year and has an annual fuel cost of $953.
Honda Insight
This hybrid car gets 40 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway. It burns 4.5 tons of carbon dioxide every year on average and has an annual fuel cost of $977.
Ford Fusion Hybrid
This sedan will get drivers 41 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. It has an annual fuel cost of $1,025. It burns 4.7 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
Ford Escape Hybrid
This hybrid SUV gets 34 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. It burns about 5.7 tons of carbon dioxide per year and costs about $1,24 for gas every year.
Mercury Mariner Hybrid
This SUV gets 34 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. It has average annual fuel costs of $1,254 and burns about 5.7 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
Mercury Milan Hybrid
This sedan gets 41 city mpg and 36 highway mpg. It burns 4.7 tons of carbon dioxide per year and costs an average of $1,025 a year for gas.
