The Toyota Motor Corporation's Camry originated as a compact economy car in 1980 and switched to a mid-size frame in 1991. It has been a consistent top seller worldwide since its inception and has a strong presence in North America due to its relatively low-maintenance costs and high fuel efficiency. Toyota offered older models as sedans and hatchbacks, but since the early 1990s the Camry was available only in a sedan. The Camry Hybrid debuted in 2006.

Under the Hood

The conventional gasoline-powered 2011 Toyota Camry features a 2.5-liter in-line four-cylinder engine equipped with four valves per cylinder and multi-point fuel injection. The engine delivers 169 horsepower and 167 foot pounds of torque. The torque is the twisting energy developed inside the engine to give the Camry its acceleration. The engine gives the Camry 22 miles per gallon in urban areas and 32 mpg in the country. An optional 3.5-liter V6 engine available on the Camry SE and XLE models generates 268 horsepower and 248 foot pounds of torque. It earns 20 to 29 mpg. The hybrid version has a gasoline-powered 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine developing 147 horsepower and 138 foot pounds of torque. The engine works in tandem with an electric power capable of developing 199 foot pounds of torque and powered by a sealed nickel metal hydride battery. Total output from the two power sources is 187 horsepower. The hybrid earns 31 to 35 mpg. Camrys have a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

Chassis

The 2011 model is equipped with all-wheel ventilated disc brakes, anti-lock braking, brake assist and electronic brake distribution systems. It also features electronic traction control operated through the anti-lock breaks. The front suspension is a conventional independent strut system, with coil springs and a stabilizer bar. The rear is a multi-link system with coil springs and stabilizer bar.
