2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD Specifications

The 2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD includes changes and improvements to the engine, transmission and features. The Duramax diesel engine offers reduced emissions and more power. The Allison automatic transmission has six-speeds with tap-shift, range-selection mode. Mirrors are now a folding and extending design, instead of the older camper-style mirrors. The 2006 Sierra 2500HD comes with manual dual-zone air conditioning and a 40/20/40-split bench seat. The SL1 models include a tilt steering wheel, driver message center, tinted glass, cruise control, an AM/FM/CD stereo, and a 40/20/40-split bench seat. SLE1 models also come with remote key-less entry, power-heated exterior mirrors, power windows and door locks, fog lamps and a leather steering wheel. SLE2 models feature an upgraded Bose stereo and a six-way power driver seat. SLTs add driver-seat memory, automatic climate control, power-retractable mirrors, bucket seats with heaters and satellite steering wheel controls.

The 2500HD with the 6-liter engine can tow up to 10,500 lb. while the 8.1-liter V-8 can tow a maximum of 12,000 lb. All models come with a trailering harness and a trailering hitch. Edmunds describes the 2500HD with the Duramax diesel as "probably the best choice for those who tow heavy loads."

All 2006 Sierra 2500HD models come with front-impact airbags, side-impact bars, center high-mounted stop light, daytime running lights, ignition disable and anti-lock brakes (ABS). The SLE1, SLE2 and SLT models also include a security system and a tracker system. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted front crash tests and the Sierra scored a three-out-of-five rating for driver protection. It earned four stars out of five for the front passenger. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also conducted a frontal crash test. Its overall rating was "marginal," which is the second-lowest rating. Also available is the OnStar communications system for 24-hour assistance, whether it's for an emergency tow, directions or a dinner reservation.

When you're shopping for a new luxury car, it's important to compare at least two different vehicles in the same class. You might consider checking out several different models by different manufacturers. In recent years, car builders have added more options, better engines and more standard safety equipment. You may be pleasantly surprised at what you find.

Before you head out to the dealer, consider packing a digital camera and a voice recorder or notebook. You might want to jot down your perceptions as you go, especially if you're checking out a handful of different vehicles.

At the dealer, take your time before you get behind the wheel. A lot of salespeople are eager to hand you the keys and send you on your way. But take a moment to soak in the details and see how you feel about this particular vehicle.

Try sitting in both the front and the back seats. Are they comfortable? How easy is it to get in and out (especially the back seat)? Also, check the cargo space. Is there enough room for the things you normally haul around, or will you wind up tossing what doesn't fit onto the seats?

Inspect the driver's seat with a critical eye. Are the controls comfortable to reach? Are the gauges easy to read?

Ideally, your test drive should last upward of 20 minutes. Experience as many different driving situations as possible: city, residential and highway. You might love the way this vehicle behaves in town but hate it once you get on the highway. As you drive, ask yourself: How does the car handle in turns? Does it accelerate briskly? Is there anything about its driving manners that bothers you?

If you regularly park in a parking garage, pull into one and see how the vehicle parks. Does it turn tightly enough? Is it easy to see the front and back edges of the vehicle?

After the drive, snap a photo of the car to take with you. In all of the excitement of test driving what might be your next car, you may miss a few details (like the style of the wheels or the exact paint color) that could make a different impression in the long run.

After you've thanked the sales staff and left the dealership, spend some time in a quiet place, free of distractions, and go over your notes. What details were most important to you? How does this vehicle measure up to others you've checked out? Most importantly, can you picture yourself driving it? Does it feel right for you? When you've found "the one," you'll know it--and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you made the right choice.

Sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) have a lot to offer, including extra cargo space, a better view of the highway and off-road and towing capabilities. More than a dozen manufacturers sell sport-utility vehicles, so researching some components can help you whittle down the list of available models.

History of GM's OnStar

General Motors launched OnStar, which includes navigation, hands-free calling and a remote diagnostics system, in 1996. The system is available on most GM and Saab vehicles. The navigation system covers North America and China. A sibling of OnStar, ChevyStar, is marketed in Latin America. GM has implemented numerous improvements since the launch of OnStar, including tracking for stolen vehicles.

GM initially equipped its luxury cars, such as Cadillac, with OnStar, and has since expanded the service to 50 different cars manufactured under the General Motors umbrella. Some 2002 to 2005 Volkswagen and Acura vehicles licensed the OnStar system as optional equipment. Along with hands-free communication, the system utilizes wireless mobile telephone technology and global positioning satellites, or GPS. As a GPS device, OnStar provides street-by-street directions. It also features diagnostics to anticipate mechanical problems and provides emergency services in the event of a collision that involves air bag deployment.

The driver operates OnStar by simply pushing a blue button under the rearview mirror. A human voice answers through the speakers. OnStar's staff can provide directions or help diagnose an engine problem and send the driver to the nearest GM dealership. The device also can unlock doors if the keys are locked inside the car, or sound the horn if the driver forgets where he parked the car. Weather and live traffic updates are also available. OnStar's red button is for emergency services, including police, fire and medical. Subscribers pay a monthly or annual fee. OnStar subscription services are not included in the price of the vehicle, although GM offers a free trial subscription.

In 2006, GM announced that it was shutting down OnStar cellular-based analog technology in 2005 and older GM cars. The shutdown affected about 500,000 OnStar subscribers. Model year 2006 and later models feature digital technology. GM's switch to digital technology followed a Federal Communications Commission ruling that allowed mobile phone operators to close analog transmission systems beginning in 2008. GM developed a kit to upgrade vehicles with the analog system to digital. GM could perform upgrades on some 2002 and most 2003 models, and virtually all 2004 and 2005 models. However, the move resulted in lawsuits from some GM vehicles owners who allege GM is liable for upgrade costs. The lawsuits were still pending in 2011. Without the upgrade, analog OnStars are unusable.

In 2009, GM implemented a "Remote IgnitionBlock" system to prevent the vehicle from starting once the owner reports stolen. OnStar's GPS system then pings the vehicle with a locator device to determine its location. The feature became available on 2 million OnStar-equipped cars.

For 2010 and later GM vehicles, including Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC trucks, General Motors improved and relaunched the OnStar MyLink mobile app program as OnStar RemoteLink. The mobile app provides vehicle owners who have OnStar with current vehicle data, including tire pressure and fuel and oil levels, as well as functions such as remote door locking and unlocking. Starting in 2011, GM also offered OnStar FMV, an installed device which provides more than 75 non-GM vehicles, such as Ford and Chrysler, among others, with basic OnStar features, including navigation, automatic crash response, hands-free calling and roadside assistance.

1998 Nissan Maxima SE Specs

The Nissan Maxima has been manufactured by the Nissan car company since 1980. 1993 Chevrolet Suburban Specifications

The 1993 Chevrolet Suburban is a sport utility vehicle (SUV) that, in 1992, moved to the platform of full-sized General Motors vehicles. Currently the most popular hybrid, the Prius is also the most fuel efficient car sold in the United States, according to a study released by the Environmental Protection Agency and United States Department of Energy. As of December 2010, the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for the Prius is $22,800.

Marketed as "a hybrid for everyone," the Honda Insight is prepped to topple the Prius as the cheapest hybrid. Ranked number one in hybrid comparison tests by Car and Driver, the Insight has received a host of other accolades. According to MyRide, not only does the Insight undercut the Prius by "several thousand dollars," it also "improves in places the Prius falls short, [such as] driver position, lower price and less hybrid-like driving dynamics." Similarly, Edmunds.com named the Insight as one of its top recommended hybrids for 2010, citing its "excellent fuel economy, seamless hybrid powertrain, and pleasant driving experience." As of December 2010, the Honda Insight retails for a suggested starting price of $18,200.

The Insight's biggest competitor for the position of cheapest hybrid comes from another Honda model. The Honda Fit Hybrid, set for release in the United States in 2011, has a starting price of around $17,000. In addition to its low price, the Fit boasts 40 mile per gallon fuel economy and interior comfort.

As of December 2010, the MSRP of the Honda Civic Hybrid is $22,600, making it more expensive than the Honda Fit, but still cheaper than most other hybrid vehicles. Though it is less powerful and smaller than the Prius, the Civic's sporty appearance has won praise, with Edmunds.com giving it 9.3 out of ten stars for overall performance. The car also offers an average of 42 miles per gallon fuel efficiency, which can be tracked on the car's computerized fuel efficiency tracking system.

How to Register a Second Hand Vehicle

When you buy a second hand car you must register your ownership with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), the organisation that controls all road safety, road law and road tax issues in the UK. They maintain a register of all drivers and cars in the country.

Instructions

Ask for the top half of the two part vehicle registration document V5 from the seller (if they have it) when you purchase the vehicle. You must licence the vehicle with the DVLA straight away.

Have the seller fill out your details if they have a three part vehicle registration document V5. Both you and the seller need to sign the document handing over ownership of the second hand vehicle to you. It is their responsibility, not yours, to send this to the DVLA, and give you the V5/2 (green) section of the document that they have filled in.

Make sure the seller fills out the 'new keeper details' of the Registration Certificate V5C if this is the documentation they have. Again, both you and the seller must sign section 8 and the seller must forward the details onto the DVLA.

Don't worry if the seller has no documentation. You will still need to register, but you can pick up the 'application for a registration' form V62 from a Post Office or download it from the DVLA website. Once completed, send this to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA.

Wait two to four weeks to receive your new registration certificate. If you have applied using the V62 form mentioned above, you may have to wait up to six weeks while the DVLA makes certain checks. If you have not received your registration certificate within six weeks, contact your local DVLA office.

Check that all your details are correct upon receipt of the new registration certificate.

Remember to notify the DVLA if any changes need to be made to your vehicle registration certificate during the course of your ownership, if your vehicle is written off or sold.

The Specifications of a 95 Honda Accord

The Accord has long been a staple car in Honda's fleet. Since 1976, it has served as the standard Honda family sedan and coupe, built around efficiency, comfort and being affordable. The Accord is still going strong after 34 years of production, though a lot has changed about it over the years. The modern Accord is bigger, heavier and more powerful than previous generations. Even as recently as the 1995 models, the car was more of a grocery getter than today's quasi-sports car.

The 1995 Accord came in several trim levels and configurations including a wagon, coupe and sedan trim models. All of these, however, shared the same 107-inch wheelbase and 70-inch width. Curb weight remained standard at 2,855 pounds. The wagon was 187-inches long, while both the coupe and the sedan were 184 inches in length. All three models stood within an inch or two of each other height wise, at around 55 inches.

Due to a combination of trim levels and body configurations, the 1995 Accord had various interior spaces. The front cabin was largely the same, however. Leg room was 43 inches, with front seat head room of 38 inches. Front shoulder and hip room were 56 and 53 inches, respectively. Climate control, stereo system and driver comforts such as a tilt steering wheel were all standard.

1995 was the first year that Honda offered a 6-cylinder engine in the Accord. This new optional engine was first seen in the Acura Legend, but made it's way into the Accord to fill American market demand for bigger, more powerful options. This engine produced 170 hp, up 20 hp from the standard 4-cylinder engine's maximum 150 horsepower. The 6-cylinder engine came with an automatic transmission and no option for a manual. The 4-cylinder came with a 5-speed manual and an option automatic transmission.

The performance numbers of any family car are rarely impressive. The standard 4-cylinder engine, when mated with the sluggish automatic transmission, takes 9.6 seconds to get from zero to 60 miles an hour. The 6 cylinder, when mated with the same transmission, takes a full 8.9 seconds. Although not significantly faster, the V6 option possesses more mid-range power for better passing.

Squishy suspension built for comfort over performance means rather awkward handling characteristics at high speeds. However, 4-wheel disc brakes with available anti-lock braking technology means that the Accord could at least hold its own in the braking department. The suspension geometry isn't terrible, however, and the application of after-market parts could turn the Accord into a decent handling vehicle.

The Best Compact Cars for Gas Mileage

The last several years have seen an increase in the number of fuel-efficient transportation options, and some former SUV, truck and van owners may look at smaller cars that cost less to fill up at gas stations. The best compact cars for gas mileage take that a step further, providing some of the best EPA mileage numbers available.

Leading the hybrids and all compact cars is the electrically-assisted Civic with 40 miles per gallon in city driving and 45 MPG on the highway according to federal tests. Part of the economy comes from a special transmission. Unlike standard manual or automatic transmissions, the Civic Hybrid has variable gear ratios that keep it from over-revving.

Honda's dedicated hybrid, the Insight, no longer gets better fuel mileage than its cousin, but highway mileage of 43 MPG and a city rating of 40 MPG still rank second in the class. For urban commuters it may be worth checking out either Honda since they share the same city mileage. Some buyers may also like the Insight's more futuristic styling compared to the Civic.

Lexus is slightly more upmarket than the other makers on this list, but the hybrid HS250h gets nearly the same mileage, whether in stop-and-go traffic or on the interstate, with a 35/34 city/highway mileage rating from EPA tests. Like the two Hondas, a special automatic transmission helps the HS250h keep from guzzling gas.

The first diesel-powered car in the compact gas mileage rankings, the diminutive Golf will lead drivers to the green pumps for fill-ups. While driving in the city will generally net about 30 miles per gallon, the Golf shines on freeways where it gets 42 MPG, eight miles more than the Lexus HS250h. Unlike the previous models listed, it's also available as a hatchback for buyers looking for a small car with slightly more cargo room.

The Jetta offers slightly more room than the Golf, but like the other Volkswagen, it is very efficient when powered by a four cylinder diesel engine. In fact, the gas mileage numbers are identical for either model because the engine is the same. That leaves other features to distinguish the Jetta, including passenger and cargo space, as well as the possibility of buying it in wagon form.

Federal law and various federal agency policies concerning electric cars have begun to transform America's economic, manufacturing and environmental landscapes. Not since the late 1970s and early 1980s when the first federal fuel-economy standards were mandated has the nation seen such an acceleration of "the largest government-mandated transformation of vehicles on the American road," according to the Chicago Tribune.

Congress passed the Energy Independence and Security Act in 2007 as a means to reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil. In 2009, British Motors fully redesigned the BMW 7 series. BMW replaced the old iDrive control system with a much improved version. The 2010 interior is spacious and superior in comfort. Luxury features such as a night vision camera and side-view cameras are among the many new additions.

The 2010 BMW 5 Series is nearing the end of its career. Although a completely redesigned model will soon debut, the BMW 5 remains one of the finest vehicles on the road. Honda Fit Vs. Yaris

The Fit and Yaris are vehicles manufactured by automotive companies Honda and Toyota, respectively. The main similarity between the two cars is that they are subcompact economy cars.

The Honda Fit is designed as a hatchback and has a more sports-oriented edition. The Yaris is divided into sedan and hatchback styles.

However, the 2008 and 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP recall some of that muscle-car image with the same V8 that powers the Corvette.

A 415-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 powered the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP. Pontiac produced the model only for 2008 and 2009. A fuel-injection system delivered 91-octane fuel from a 19-gallon tank, and a compression ratio of 10.7:1 helped the V8 generate 415 ft.-lb. of torque. The torque gave the G8 GXP its off-the-line power from a standstill. The engine is a General Motors LS3 small-block Chevy V8, which also powers the 2008 and later Corvettes. Matched with a Tremec 6060 six-speed manual transmission, the V8 propelled the G8 GXP from zero to 60 mph in about 4.7 seconds. It completed the quarter mile in 13.2 seconds. Fuel efficiency, however, is only middling, earning 13 mpg in the city and 20 on the highway.

An anti-lock braking system (ABS), brake assist and electronic brake distribution complemented the G8 GXP's all-wheel ventilated 14-inch Brembo disc brakes. Coil springs and stabilizer bars matched the independent strut suspension in the front and independent multi-link suspension in the rear.

The 4,050-lb. G8 GXP shared the same dimensions as its sibling, the G8 GT. It had a 114.8-inch wheelbase, and was 196.1 inches long, 74.8 inches wide and 74.8 inches tall. Its curb-to-curb turning radius was 37.4 feet. The cabin featured front leg room at 42.2 inches, with the rear leg room at 39.4 inches. The cabin also featured 38.7 inches of head room in the front and 38 inches of head room in the rear seat. Cargo space was 17.5 cubic feet. The G8 GXP rode on 19-inch wheels.

Standard equipment for the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP included front and rear bumpers painted to match the body color, daytime running lights, fog lamps, luxury leather and alloy accents on the gearshift knob, steering wheel and dashboard, rear spoiler, air conditioning with climate control, anti-theft system and a 11-speaker Blaupunkt RDS satellite stereo system with six-disc CD player and MP3 reader. Perhaps it's time to shop for a new car but you don't want to pay more than you have to. Besides the cost of the car itself, you also should be concerned with the interest rate if you plan to finance it. Most car dealers will provide you financing, and you can also approach your own bank or credit union for a car loan. Both sources will charge the most interest they can, so it's up to you to negotiate the best rate.

The compact Ford Focus was upgraded in 2009 to feature a sporty coupe trim, new roof spoiler and increased horsepower. The 2011 Focus continues to showcase the 2009 additions; it also has a two-liter, four-cylinder engine with 140 horsepower. The 2011 Focus comes in four trim options: the S, SE, SES and SEL. The differences between the trims lie in the standard interior and exterior features, base price and available options.

The 2011 Ford Focus S starts at $16,640, while the SE starts at $17,270. The SES had a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $18,870, and the SEL's MSRP was $19,670. The difference in price comes from the SES and SEL's sporty trim options and standard features, including leather-wrapped steering and SYNC audio connectivity. These features are not available on the S and SE trims, or they are available only as extra-cost options.

Rear stabilizer bars that keep a vehicle from rolling in a sharp turn come standard with the SES and SEL, but these are not available on the S and SE trims. Other differences among the four trims include European-inspired suspension only available with the S and SE. According to Ford, this suspension helps to sharpen the steering and handling characteristics of the vehicle. Performance-tuned suspension, which provides a larger rear stabilizer bar for a better grip when taking curves, is only available on the SES trim.

A five-speed manual transmission is standard on the S, SE and SES models, and a four-speed automatic transmission is optional. The SEL is only available with a four-speed automatic transmission.

The 2011 Ford Focus SES and SEL trims come standard with metallic instrument panel applique and ambient interior lighting, which are not available on the S and SE trims. Sirius satellite radio connectivity is standard on all trims except the S. Heated front seats and leather-trimmed seats are optional on the SES, standard on the SEL and unavailable on the S and SE trims.

The SES and SEL trims come standard with a chrome exhaust tip, fog lamps and head and tail lamps surrounded by dark chrome. Only the fog lamps are available as an option on the SE trim, and none of these features are available on the S.

Tips on Buying a Used Motorcycle

When shopping for a motorcycle, the used market offers a lot of bargains for the savvy shopper. There are several things to consider when you start shopping that will help you find a good bike and avoid a lemon while still meeting your budget. The newspaper classifieds and Craigslist offer several opportunities to find a good deal on a bike.

Being patient is important to finding a deal. Avoid buying the first bike that catches your eye, especially if the seller's ad says the price is firm. Waiting a bit may make the seller more willing to drop the price. When you see an ad that interests you, write down the information. Try tracking the ads for a week or two. Often a seller may think they have sold the product and the original buyer drops out for one reason or another, so it is worth a follow-up call to see if the motorcycle is still available. Be willing to offer cash at the time of purchase; that is a powerful incentive to the seller.

You'll want to evaluate the overall condition of the bike. Check the gas tank to see if it is rusty; rust can damage the engine. Check the clutch to see if appears loose, and check how much material is left on the brake pads and look at the color of the brake fluid (it should appear amber). Ask the owner how many miles the tires have on them, and check the tread to see how much is left on the tires (1/8 inch or more). These can all give you clues to whether the prior owner has kept up with proper maintenance on the bike.

Racing and crashes are obviously very hard on a bike. There are clues that can tell you whether the bike has been in crashes or used for racing. Look for scratches on the engine casing and plastic, and whether paint or metal has been ground off the handlebars. Check the brake and clutch levers on both sides to see if they are identical and whether they have any cracks. Check the front forks to see if they are straight or not, and check the frame for cracks.

Before going to look at the bike, ask the seller if they will let you test ride it. Bring riding equipment with you so you can ride it if the owner will let you.

1997 Mazda Miata Specs

The 1997 Mazda Miata is a two-seat convertible roadster that is as economical as it is fun to drive, achieving an estimated 29 mpg on the highway and 23 mpg in the city. Autos That Get Over 40 Miles Per Gallon

Because of high gas prices, more consumers are looking for fuel-efficient vehicles. Once cost-prohibitive, it is now more affordable to purchase a vehicle that gets more than 40 miles per gallon. Although several vehicles that meet this criteria are available worldwide, only a few were available in the United States as of October 2010.

The Prius is a gas/electric hybrid vehicle that boasts an EPA-rated fuel efficiency of 51 MPG city and 48 MPG highway for the 2010 model. It has been the most fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle since 2007. It is equipped with a 1.8-liter L4 engine and a lightweight hybrid system. It has three drive modes -- EV, ECO and Power -- that provide all-electric power for short trips under 25 mph, optimum fuel efficiency and high acceleration, respectively. The cost in October 2010 ranged between $21,000 and $28,010, depending on the submodel.

The Insight, another hybrid vehicle, yields 40 MPG city, 43 MPG highway for its 2010 model. Like other hybrids, it has a regenerative brake system that charges the battery when the brakes are applied. It has a 1.3-liter engine and a 10-kilowatt DC electric motor. Its cost ranged between $19,800 and $32,100 in October 2010.

The 2011 Civic Hybrid has an EPA-rated efficiency of 40 MPG city and 43 MPG highway. It has a 110-horsepower, 1.3-liter gas engine and a 20-horsepower electric motor that weighs in at just under 80 pounds. Its cost ranged between $23,950 and $27,150 in October 2010.

Other vehicle models, including the Citron C2 from France, Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion and the Toyota iQ, get gas mileage as high as 57 MPG; however, none of these were available in the United States as of 2010. It is primarily a diesel issue with these vehicles. U.S. emissions standards for diesel vehicles are the most stringent in the world, making it difficult for these car models to be sold here because they would require costly modifications.
